The Power of Your Subconscious Mind
Murphy's defining work and one of the most accessible guides to subconscious programming ever written. His sleep-state imprinting technique targets the same theta-wave window that Neville's SATS technique uses - and the neuroscience confirms why both work. Note: this work remains in copyright, managed by the Joseph Murphy Trust and Penguin Random House.

Questions about The Power of Your Subconscious Mind
Why do affirmations feel like a lie when I try them?+
Because the prefrontal cortex flags any statement that contradicts lived experience as a falsehood, triggering cognitive dissonance and a threat response. The result is the opposite of what you want: the nervous system reinforces the state you are trying to escape. Murphy's solution is the drowsy pre-sleep state, where the critical faculty is suspended and the suggestion reaches the subconscious without resistance. A second fix is progressive laddering: 'I am training my brain to recognise financial opportunities' is logically true, so the conscious mind accepts it without triggering an alarm. 'I am wealthy' is not - and is rejected.
How do I use Murphy's drowsy state without falling asleep immediately?+
Adjust your posture. Avoid lying flat in bed before your practice; instead, sit propped against pillows or in a straight-backed chair. Close your eyes, take slow diaphragmatic breaths to down-regulate your nervous system, and silently repeat your chosen phrase at a moderate internal volume. When your mind wanders, return to the words. Once the suggestion feels settled and your mind is stilled, you can move to lying down and let sleep carry it into consolidation. The target is the theta threshold - drowsy but not yet unconscious - which is the window of maximum subconscious receptivity.
What is Murphy's 'scientific prayer' and how does it differ from ordinary prayer?+
Scientific prayer is declaration, not petition. Ordinary prayer asks an external power to grant something. Murphy's scientific prayer asserts the desired condition as present truth, working from the premise that the subconscious mind accepts what is consistently impressed upon it and acts to produce it. The 'science' is the consistency of the mechanism: it operates the same way for any practitioner who applies it correctly, regardless of religious tradition. It is closer to CBT's behavioural activation - acting from the assumption that the desired state is real - than to devotional prayer.
What is the Law of Reverse Effort and why does it undermine affirmations?+
The Law of Reverse Effort - Emile Coue's principle, which Murphy cites directly - states that when the will and the imagination are in conflict, the imagination always wins. If you force an affirmation while anxious or desperate, the dominant somatic state is the fear of not having, and that is what the subconscious encodes. Murphy was explicit: 'your subconscious mind does not respond to coercion, it responds to your faith or conscious mind acceptance.' The fix is somatic regulation first - reach a parasympathetic state of calm before introducing any new suggestion - so the imagination and the stated intention are aligned rather than in conflict.
